Abandoned Planes in Saida: Four airplanes, six old tanks, and four other military vehicles, all of which were donated by the Lebanese Army, were submerged to form a habitat where coral reefs can grow and reproduce. The planes that will be sunk, along with the other military vehicles that have been submerged last July, will help restore balance to marine life, enrich coral reefs and raise environmental awareness. The aquatic park has also a touristic and economic value as it will attract tourists and divers from all over the world.
The artificial reef structures we have deployed benefit the marine ecosystem in a variety of ways. The structures act as a substrate for coral larvae to attach while also providing a link between natural reef patches, improving connectivity by allowing individuals to move safely from one coral patch to another.
